I’m in Tulsa, at Matt’s house. The day was really wearing for me – it started out well with Mrs. Colle’s waffles for breakfast, and the first couple of hours were fine, with calm conditions and some overcast to keep it cool. I stopped in Pawhuska and again in Barnsdall for lunch. The country store there felt alien – just about every blue-collar workman in the county was eating there, and I got a lot of semi-hostile stares. The wind turned nasty about that time, but after a few miles along the top of a plateau with no trees, the road dropped into a forested valley, which blocked the worst of the wind. I arrived in Skiatook about 3, but the last stretch was really hard, and I didn’t get into Tulsa until 5. I will be here for about a week, and am really looking forward to some rest. My bicycle needs a number of parts, so I will get those from Midtown.
Route notes: Highway 11 between US-99 and Wolcott is awful – heavy truck traffic and no shoulder. I probably should have continued to Hominy on 99 (which has a pretty good shoulder), then taken OK-20 into Skiatook. There is a rail trail that runs from Skiatook all the way into downtown Tulsa, and I am a little surprised that I remembered how to find the trailhead after 3 years.
